Postcards from Home

Postcards from Home is an analogue archive – here presented digitally – of somatic and creative practices taking place in the intimacy of home through the long-distance digital connection of online classes.

The zoom classes that grew this work included Somatics & Photography, BodyMind Writing, Circulate: Somatics & Creative Practice, and various courses in Body-Mind Centering® in 2020-2022. For this project I invited participants to offer samples of their writing, mark-making and photographs, and for each postcard I juxtaposed a visual image and a text from two different people.

Postcards are usually mailed back home from faraway places, the ‘wish you were here’ reports of adventures had. Postcards from Home gathers and celebrates some of the fine, creative adventures that many of us got up to during the pandemic through the lifeline of online classes. These cards celebrate everyday beauty – moments of noticing one’s breath and weight as a very local exchange, moments of tuning into one’s soundscape, of seeing how the light falls, of appreciating the textures of the floor, the carpet, the worn places, the trees, how the view changes with even a tiny shift of position or release into movement.

In contemplative photography practice, the photographic image shares a unique flash of perception, a moment of awareness. Somatic writing is similarly loyal to the specificity of what is felt, imagined or conjured in the meeting of movement, kinaesthetic awareness and the richness of words. These are whispers and evidence of practice and presence from homes around the globe, sharing what was noticed and of note.

What resonates in the conversation between image and text will be unique to the recipient of the card. May it serve as a spark that leads to another creative response – perhaps some movement, sounding, writing, drawing, or adventures with the camera – a prompt rather than just a product, a way to continue the practice.
